Mendocino is the quintessential Californian coastal town. Think rugged cliffs, crashing waves, and adorable clapboard houses clinging to hillsides. It is perfect for those who love the ocean and need some fresh air. Mendocino is the perfect destination for a long weekend trip from San Francisco but a short break from San Francisco.

Things to Do in Mendocino

  • Take your time and wander through the towns along the highway – Gualala, Elk, Fort Bragg, and Mendocino itself.
  • In Elk, check out Matson Mercantile, a one-stop shop for interesting finds.
  • In Mendocino, browse the art galleries and then refuel with delicious vegetarian food and wine at the Fog Eater Cafe.
  • If fresh seafood is more your style, head to Princess Seafood in Fort Bragg.
  • Hike the dramatic trails of Jug Handle State Natural Reserve for epic ocean views and a chance to spot gray whales (between December and April).

Lake Tahoe is a year-round playground, offering everything from world-class skiing in winter to crystal-clear lake activities in summer making it a perfect road trip destination for a weekend getaway anytime of the year. 

Things to Do in Lake Tahoe

  • Hike or bike the scenic trails around the lake, taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. 
  • Hit the slopes in winter at one of the renowned resorts like Heavenly or Palisades Tahoe.
  • Go river rafting or tubing on the Truckee River to get your adrenaline fix 
  • Try Argentinian empanadas at Empanash and then walk 0.2 miles for  some espresso gelato on the same boardwalk 🤤

Must-Do in Lake Tahoe

Take a 3.5 lunch day cruise to Emerald Bay in North Lake Tahoe ( it will be  worth every penny). You will see the most vibrant cobalt-blue waters of Lake Tahoe at Emerald Bay. Keep an eye out for playful otters and bald eagles soaring overhead.

After a hike or a day on the lake feast on succulent steaks and fresh seafood at The Beacon, a lakeside restaurant with stunning views (especially at sunset). For an inexpensive option,  Brothers Burritos will satisfy your palate.

You can’t go wrong with Freshies Ohana, grab their Jamaican Jerk Fish Tacos(it’s a whole experience). Also any Sprouts for lunch is always a great idea. Their menu is great.

In addition you can have a picnic. Stock up on gourmet cheeses, artisan breads, and local honey from any grocery store and head out for a scenic picnic by the river.

Where to Stay in Hope Valley 

  • Best Overall: Sorensen’s Resort – Historic lodge with lakefront cabins, spa, and family activities.
  • Best Budget: Woodfords Inn– Simple, clean rooms with a friendly atmosphere, perfect for budget-conscious travelers.
  • Best Luxury: None (Luxury isn’t Hope Valley’s style, but Sorensen’s offers the closest experience)
  • Best Glamping: not much glamping options, but cozy B&Bs offer a similar charm
Solvang, California

WEEKEND GETAWAY #5: SOLVANG

  • Distance: 300 miles, 4.5 hours south of San Francisco 
  • Highlights: Danish charm in California,Windmills and best bakeries

Solvang is a charming Danish village nestled in the Santa Ynez Valley. Think storybook architecture, windmills, and bakeries overflowing with flaky pastries for your weekend trip from San Francisco.

Things to do In Solvang

  • Wander down the flower-lined streets, browsing the quaint shops selling everything from traditional Danish clogs to Viking jewelry.
  • Take a Viking Cooking Class and learn the art of Viking cuisine. Prepare a traditional feast with hearty stews, roasted meats, and maybe even a taste of mead!
  • Rent a Bike & check out the beautiful European country-side type scenery at Santa Ynez valley,stopping at local shops, bakeries.
  • Get some Abelskevers for breakfast ( I could bathe in Abelskivers, they are that good) 
  • Zipline Tour at one of the longest and fastest zipline in California at Highline Adventures
  • Feed the bad boys at OstrichLand USA. This ostrich and emu ranch allows you to feed these fascinating birds and learn about their unique behavior. These birds can be mean , I try not to make eye contact as they can sense fear… 
  • Buy one of a kind pastries from any of the bakeries, have a picnic at the park in Solvang with said pastries and pretend you are in Europe. Or choose a picnic spot off of Foxen Canyon Road for more seclusion. 

Must-Do in Solvang

Eat copious amounts of cheese, Danish pastries like the Abelskevers (make sure to bring some back home) and Danish foods like frikadeller.

Paula’s Pancake House for breakfast. Cafe Dolce for coffee and baklava. Leftys also has great coffee, hang out in the backyard, it is super cute and there is lots of seating. Sausage Garden is good and a fun lunch spot. For dinner,  Brothers in Santa Ynez. Solvang Restaurant for irresistible Abelskivers.

Bodega Bay

WEEKEND GETAWAY #6: BODEGA BAY

  • Distance: 80 miles, 1.5 hours north of San Francisco
  • Highlights: seaside serenity, Kayak with seals, spot harbor porpoises

Bodega Bay is a breath of fresh air, ideal for a relaxing and quick scenic getaway from the Bay Area. It’s got just a little bit of everything for everyone. From charming harbor towns, wildlife spotting opportunities, and endless stretches of sandy beaches its also another perfect destination for a weekend getaway from San Francisco.

Things to Do in Bodega Bay 

  • Kayak through the calm waters of Bodega Bay, keeping an eye out for harbor seals and harbor porpoises. Or grab a stand up paddle board. The bay has perfect placid waters
  • Hike the scenic trails of Bodega Head State Reserve for panoramic views of the rugged coastline.The Kortum Trail is an amazing walk along the bluffs.
  • No trip to Bodega Bay is complete without a visit to this Patricks Taffy. Step back in time with their retro pink and white facade and indulge in a massive selection of saltwater taffy in every flavor imaginable.
  • Get your fix of clam chowder! Spud Point for great clam chowder (white or red) and crab sandwiches—it’s a walk-up window with a few outside picnic tables. You can eat there or take it to Bodega Head for the view.
  • Go on a Bioluminescent Night Kayak Tour in Tomales Bay. Witness the magical phenomenon of bioluminescence as your kayak cuts through water teeming with glowing plankton.

Check out Fishetarian Fish Market and grab a crab sandwich or some oysters.Their chowder and tacos are aaamazing .Hang by the water and enjoy the weather! Also check out Wildflower Bread Bakery,  their Fougasse bread is a treat and on the days they have it get the chocolate cherry scone.

  • Distance: 120 miles,  2 hours south of San Francisco 
  • Highlights: Upscale Coastal Escape, delicious seafood, Rugged Beauty

Monterey has a dramatic coast that evokes the rugged beauty of the California coastline. It has a rich history that hints at the town’s Spanish colonial past and artistic heritage and it has marine marvels that includes world-class Monterey Bay Aquarium. So why not head to Monterey for a weekend getaway from San Francisco?  Oh and it has delicious seafood! 

Things to do in Monterey ( There’s A lot!)

  • Embark on a self-guided “Sweets & Treats” walking tour. Sample delicious pastries at French bakeries, handcrafted chocolates at local shops all on Cannery Row. 
  • Explore Monterey Bay Aquarium where you can come face-to-face with everything from playful otters to majestic kelp forests.
  • Immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of the Tuesday-only Alvarado Street farmers’ market. Sample local treats like Dungeness crab cakes or fresh-baked bread. 
  • Take a hike through the diverse landscapes of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Choose from easy nature trails perfect for families, or more challenging hikes offering stunning cliffside views
  • Rent a bike and cruise the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail for scenic ocean views.
  • Take a day trip to Carmel-by- the Sea charming village known for its art galleries, upscale shops, and fairytale-like cottages.
  • Catch as many sunsets/sunrises as you can at Point Lobos (ideally in the morning). That place is a zoo by late morning. But absolutely a must – so incredible!

Must-Do in Monterey

Pack a delicious spread of local treats from your “Sweets & Treats” adventure and head to Asilomar State Beach. This scenic beach offers sandy stretches and rocky coves, perfect for a picnic lunch. We went  to Asilomar with our crackers and cheese plates and saw pods of dolphins hunting in the waves. It took our picnic to an entirely different dimension. Don’t forget your binoculars!  

Foodie Finds in Monterey

For insanely creamy ice cream, go to Pacific Grove Ice Cream Shoppe. For some sushi try Ocean Sushi , it is take out only but it has really good Japanese food and reasonably priced sushi.

  • Best Overall: Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa – Refined oceanfront location, spacious rooms with some fireplaces, and excellent service.
  • Best Budget: Cannery Row Inn – Quaint hotel with fireplaces in some rooms, a central location, and easy access to shops and restaurants.
  • Best Luxurious: Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay– nautical theme, with some rooms offering balconies and ocean views. It has a spa, a fitness center.
  • Best Glamping: Saddle Mountain Ranch– plush comfortable beds outdoors
  • Best Oceanfront:  Hotel Abrego  is aMonte rey gem, offering Spanish Colonial charm, luxurious rooms, and a rooftop terrace with stunning city views.
  • Consider staying in an AirBnB outside of Monterey in Pacific Grove or Carmel-by-the-Sea for a quieter and potentially more affordable option.
Nevada City, CA A Preserved Gold Country Town 

WEEKEND GETAWAY #8: NEVADA CITY

  • Distance: 150 miles, 3 hours East of San Francisco
  • Highlights: Gold Rush charm, historic streets, surrounded by forests and rushing rivers

Nevada City is a blast to the past, a well preserved charming gold rush town nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Things to do in Nevada City

  • Explore the historic downtown area, lined with beautifully preserved Victorian-era buildings.
  • Go Whitewater rafting on the South Yuba River. This is a great way to cool off on a hot day and enjoy the beauty of the Sierra Nevada foothills.
  • Take a local art class at one of these Several art studios that offer classes in various mediums, from painting and pottery to jewelry making and glass blowing. 
  • Hike Along the beautiful rushing Yuba river on the easy, short Hoyt Trail in Nevada City
  • Catch a Performance at the Nevada Theatre, an historic theater established in 1865. Enjoy a variety of performances, from live music and comedy shows to classic films and theatrical productions. 
  • Drive from Nevada City to Downieville (approximately 1.5 hours). Explore the town’s historic Main Street, lined with charming 19th-century buildings and shops.

You have got to explore the area’s rich mining history while in Nevada city at  Empire Mine State Historic Park. Explore the park’s grounds, including the original mine buildings, owner’s mansion with restored gardens, and the entrance to the vast network of abandoned mine shafts.

Head to Marshalls Pasties for a taste of a local favorite.  These traditional savory pastries, filled with meat and vegetables, are a delicious and hearty lunch option. Savor a delightful fondue dinner at Friar Tuck’s. This restaurant offers a variety of fondue options, perfect for a unique and interactive dining experience. Treat yourself to a delightful selection of handcrafted chocolates at the Nevada City Chocolate Shop.
