Mono County, nestled in the Eastern Sierra Nevada, is a hidden gem for those seeking breathtaking fall foliage. With its diverse landscapes, ranging from alpine meadows to rugged canyons, this region offers a feast for the eyes during the autumn season. Let’s explore some of the most stunning spots to witness the vibrant colors of fall in Mono County.
When is the Best Time to see Fall Foliage in Mono County
The best time to visit Mono County for fall foliage is typically late September to early October. However, the exact timing can vary depending on the year and elevation.
- Higher elevations: Mid-to-late September
- Lower elevations: Early October
- Mid-October: Lundy Canyon, Convict Lake, and the June Lake Loop
I would keep a close eye on California Fall Color to find out the best locations for seeing fall color. It is pretty much everywhere right now, but some areas may be past their peak while others are at peak, some just coming into peak. It can change rapidly at this time. Be prepared to drive to various locations, to see where the color is best.
What is the Weather Like this Time of Year
Fall in the eastern sierras brings cooler temperatures, with mornings and evenings often in the 30s or lower. Daytime highs typically reach the 60s, but can be cooler on some days. To be prepared for potential early snowstorms, check the weather forecast and pack accordingly.
Best Places to See Fall Colors in Mono County
CONVICT LAKE
Convict Lake is a stunning alpine lake surrounded by towering granite cliffs of the Sherwin Range mountains. There is a serene 2.5 miles, flat loop trail around the lakeshore with vibrant yellow and orange colors reflecting off the lake.
The lake gets its name from an interesting event. In the fall of 1871, two escaped convicts from Carson City, Nevada fled to this area.
You can also kayak on Convict Lake and soak in all the fall colors!
MAMMOTH LAKES
Mammoth Lakes, a popular year-round destination, transforms into a picturesque wonderland during autumn. During fall, Mammoth Lakes brims with glowing leaves.
The Mammoth Lakes Town Loop at Mammoth Creek Park, is a popular start point from which you can tour the eastern half of Mammoth. Biking the 7.3 mile loop is a great way to explore Mammoth and adjust to altitude. The bike path runs along Main Street. If you are hungry or thirsty, there are plenty of food and drink options along this road.
Mammoth Lakes Basin is also another spectacular option. There is a 4.4 mile hike that takes you through all the lakes.
For the best fall picnic with benches and a pretty vista, go to Sherwins Vista
A wonderful scenic drive with the option for an easy side trip to Inyo Craters is the Mammoth Scenic Loop.
Twin Lakes is a short drive from the center of Mammoth. It is located next to the Tamarack lodge. There are relatively flat trails that take you around the lakes or over to the Twin Lakes Chapel (if you are looking to get married spontaneously). There is also a waterfall you can hike to as well.
Another fun fall activity in Mammoth Lakes, would be kayaking on Crowley lake or Mono Lake.

ROCK CREEK CANYON
The nine-mile road that slices through this glacier-carved canyon is lined by aspen stands, campgrounds, rustic lodges and footpaths, making it one of the best-loved autumn drives in California. It leads to many hiking trails and a lake and has with so many good areas to walk through a little golden wonderland.
We were there last October, and I recall the drive on Rock Creek Road to be one of the most brilliant areas for fall color. We were going for a short hike, but stopped along the road numerous times for photos. This was late afternoon and the light was perfect.

SAGEHEN SUMMIT
Sagehen Summit is one of my favorite spots because I don’t think its that popular yet. A 0.7 mile trail takes you to the summit where you will be surrounded by a mix of conifers and aspens, for ultimate panoramic views.
CONWAY SUMMIT
Conway Summit is easily viewed from Highway 395 , and is a multi-layered canvas of autumn color. You could probably sit there for hours and just want to set up a canvas and paint.
The north west side of Conway summit is well-worth stopping for. I see photography groups up there every fall because you get such a gorgeous panoramic view.
I wouldn’t wait too late in the day, it’s probably best with early morning or late afternoon sun. Quite gorgeous.Take a leisurely drive along Conway Summit Road or hike to the summit for panoramic views.
