Fall is the perfect time to hit the open road and explore the beauty of California’s Eastern Sierra on Highway 395. From the dramatic landscapes of the Alabama Hills to the serene beauty of the High Sierra, this Highway 395 Road Trip is truly magical and through some of the most stunning scenery in the state!
Highway 395 Road Trip Guide on the Best Stops
Stop 1: Alabama Hills
Alabama Hills is near Lone Pine and it’s a famous desert zone with really wild rock formations where many, many movies were filmed including Django and Tremors. It also sits directly east of the tallest peak in the continental US. So I would say it must stop along Highway 395.

Things to Do:
- See Mobius Arch, a unique rock formation, is a photographer’s dream.
- Explore the movie locations where classic Western films were shot.
- Hike trails on Mount Whitney the highest in the contiguous United States
- Try rock climbing! There are many tour guides available
- Camp under the stars and experience the magic of sleeping amidst the rock formations
- Grab a bite at Alabama Hills Cafe in Lone Pine for some classic comfort food.
Stop 2: Red Rock Canyon
Red Rock Canyon State Park offers a stark contrast to the Alabama Hills, with vibrant red rock formations and sweeping vistas. Here you can get a taste of some Arizona landscape.

Things to Do:
- See Painted Gorge which is a stunning canyon with colorful rock formations.
- See Calico Basin home to ancient petroglyphs and unique rock formations

Stop 3: Bishop
Bishop is a charming town nestled in the Eastern Sierra, offering a perfect base for exploring the surrounding area.

- Visit Schat’s Bakery: Indulge in their famous cinnamon rolls and other delicious treats. Turkey sandwich there is to die for! Grab some pastries and some jalapeño cheese bread
- Must stock up on meat at Mahogany Meats for your camping adventures.They also have some amazing beef jerky, not cheap, but really good.
- Bishop is a world-renowned destination for rock climbing.
- Hike, camp and fish Bishop Inyo National Forest
- Visit Owens River Gorge, dramatic canyon carved by the Owens River
- Visit Keough Hot Springs: relaxing escape in the largest natural hot spring pool around
Stop 4: Big Pine Lakes Trail
The Big Pine Lakes Trail in Inyo National Forest offers stunning views of the Eastern Sierra and leads to several picturesque lakes.

- Must see Sabrina Lake a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains and is especially pretty in the fall.
- Kayak and explore the calm waters of the creek surrounded by the Eastern Sierra Mountains

- Enjoy a scenic drive along the Bishop Creek Canyon Road with fall foliage
Stop 6: Convict Lake
Convict Lake is a beautiful alpine lake surrounded by mountains, offering a peaceful retreat.
Things to Do:
- Simply enjoy the lake itself and the surrounding mountains. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada.
Stop 7: Wild Willy’s Hot Springs
Wild Willy’s Hot Springs is a popular destination for soaking in natural hot springs and enjoying the outdoors.
Things to Do:
- Soak in the hot springs, there are several pools with varying temperatures.
- Hike and explore the nearby trails

Stop 8: Hot Creek Geologic Site
Hot Creeks Geologic Site is a fascinating area with hot springs, fumaroles, and mudpots. Its a mini version of Yellowstone!
Things to Do:
- The site offers several trails that allow you to explore the area and observe the geothermal features up close
- Its a great place to capture stunning photography
Stop 9: Bristlecone Pine National Monument
Bristlecone Pine National Monument is in my opinion one of the most amazing places on the continent and without a doubt the most underrated place in America.
Things to Do:
- See Methuselah Grove which is home to the oldest known living non-clonal organism, a bristlecone pine estimated to be over 4,800 years old.
- See Patriarch Grove, the largest bristlecone pine tree.
Stop 10: June Lake
June Lake is a picturesque alpine lake surrounded by mountains, offering a variety of outdoor activities. Experience the charm of a small mountain town and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and outdoor activities
Things to Do:
- Enjoy the the lake itself and the the surrounding mountains of the Sierra Nevada
- Explore the trails around the lake.
- Boating/kayak/paddleboard on the. There are many rental equipment shops
- Visit Mammoth Mountain
Stop 11: Mono Lake
Mono Lake is a unique saline lake with towering tufa formations, offering a fascinating glimpse into the natural world.
Things to Do:
- See the tufa formations which are super cool structures that rise from the water
- Hike along many trails surrounding desert landscape
- Rent a boat or kayak and explore the lake
Stop 12: Bridgeport
Bridgeport is another little gem of the Eastern Sierras offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle.
Things to Do:
- Visit Bodie State Historic Park and explore a ghost town frozen in time.An abandoned mining town that kinda looks like everyone just up and left one day
- Visit Topaz Lake and enjoy boating, fishing, and swimming.
- Go Horseback riding
- Visit Buckeye Hot Springs and rejuvenate in the natural hot springs. Buckeye Hot Spring is maybe 20 minutes from town, my personal favorite hot spring and a mandatory stop when I pass Bridgeport. Can get a little blown out on weekends
- Enjoy a barbecue at Mountain View BBQ and savor their delicious smoked meats.

- Pack layers of clothing as temperatures can vary significantly throughout the day.
