Day 1: San Francisco to Napa Valley

Day 2:  Napa to Redding

Drive Time: 200 miles, 3 hours

Grab yourself a bakery dessert and a coffee at one of these exceptional cafes and hit the road north. 

Red Bluff

While on the way to Redding it may be worth your while to stop in Red Bluff. Often overlooked, it surprises visitors with its hidden treasures. The William B. Ide Adobe State Historic Park offers insight into California’s history, while the Sacramento River Bend Area invites birdwatching and hiking. The vibrant downtown area is a delightful stop for shopping and local cuisine. 

This is about a 15-20 minute drive from Red Bluff to the parking areas where you can hike or ride bikes or horses, etc. It’s a fun place to spend some time. We have gone walking here, and also spent time down near the river having a little picnic. A nice peaceful place to spend a few hours and stretch your legs before you embark on the road again.

Redding 

As you travel further north, the city of Redding emerges as a hub of natural wonders. The Sundial Bridge, an architectural marvel designed by Santiago Calatrava, spans the Sacramento River and offers stunning views of the city.

Day 3: Redding to Mt. Shasta 

Drive Time: 60 miles, 1 hour

Continuing north, your road trip takes you to the majestic Mt. Shasta. The town of Mt. Shasta itself boasts a charming atmosphere, with boutique shops, local eateries, and breathtaking views of the mountain’s snow-capped peak. I highly recommend staying a full day or two in Mt. The Cleetwood Cove Trail is a popular trail on the East rim of the park. It is the only legal access to the lake where swimming, fishing and boat tours are allowed.

I am not sure I have the words to adequately describe the hike down to the lake. The water is just so blue and so clear, it draws you in immediately. Melted glacial water, you can fill your drinking bottle with it, and as such it’s amongst the clearest bodies of water in the world.

The water is super cold with an average temp of 57 degrees. In the summer.  If you do decide to swim , it will be one of the most amazing natural swims, just remember to bring warm clothes.

Drive along Rim Drive

Drive along 33 miles Rim Drive to enjoy panoramic viewpoints, hike trails that offer stunning vistas, and capture memories of this natural wonder. Estimate about 2 hours to do the entire thing with stops & breaks and such.

There are lots of lookout points and overlooks which allow you magnificent views with VERY LITTLE EFFORT. If you do want to take some hikes, you can as well. The hikes range from easy to moderately difficult.

If you go to the Rim Village Visitor Center, there are actual toilets. Also a nice spot to sit in front of Crater Lake if you’ve packed some food.

Diamond Lake

Diamond Lake is located just a few miles north of Crater Lake, and is a great place to stop for a picnic or a swim. There are also several hiking trails in the area that offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Don’t forget your America the Beautiful Pass to give you access to all national parks and more than 2,000 federal recreation sites  for one year. For just $80.00, it is definitely worth your buck.  

Where to Stay in Crater Lake  

Consider staying overnight at the park’s lodge to bask in the tranquility of the surroundings.

Crater Lake is surrounded by national forest, so no towns close within 15-20 miles. If you’re not wanting to rough it in a campground or cabin, and can’t get a room at the Crater Lake Lodge, you can find some decent motels in Prospect (35 miles) or Shady Cove (60 miles). 

If you want to be 15-20(30 minutes) miles from the park, Diamond Lake and Union Creek both have cabins.

It isn’t anything fancy, but Diamond Lake Resort is close enough that you could stay there and bike the ring road and have a sunset picnic. Having seen sunrises and sunsets at Crater Lake, I would say that is a must do experience and a forever memory.
