Where to Park at Blue Heron Lake

Blue Heron Lake is one of the easiest places to park in San Francisco. The parking lot at the boathouse is small, but you can park anywhere on the road that rings the lake. Parking is free.

You can leave your car along Stow Lake Drive and embark on a scenic walk.

There is so much to do at and around Blue Heron Lake, and you don’t even have to spend a penny! The best part for me was just walking around the lake and sitting on the many benches available once I spotted a Blue Heron.

Look closely, and you might spot the resident blue herons, the very birds that inspired the lake’s recent renaming, gracefully gliding across the water’s surface. The gentle murmur of cascading water from Huntington Falls on Strawberry Hill Island adds a touch of serenity to the ambiance.

During April and May, the Heron Watch Program naturalists will be there with their spotting telescopes; the public is invited to take a look. The birds are big enough to see even without the scopes, but if you have binocs, bring them for a close-up
