I’ve done the day trip more times than I can count, and every single time I leave thinking the same thing: I should have just stayed the night at a boutique hotel.
So if you’re finally doing it — if you’re actually booking the trip and staying over — first of all, good for you. Second of all, let me help you pick the best hotel to stay in Carmel by the Sea
Best Budget-Friendly Hotels in Carmel-by-the-Sea
Yes, you can do Carmel without spending a fortune. Here’s how.
1. Carriage House Inn

Best for: Comfortable stay without the luxury price tag
Right in the heart of Carmel Carriage House Inn is walkable to everything. Arrive, drop your bags, and get out and explore — which is really all you need in a town this good.
- Walking distance to shops, galleries and restaurants
- Cozy, well-appointed rooms
- Reliable and consistently well-reviewed
What I love: Great location and the price actually makes sense
2. Carmel Cottage Inn

Best for: Budget travelers, small groups, anyone who loves a kitchen
Five historic cottages tucked in a garden, one block from Carmel Beach. Simple, sweet, and the location is genuinely excellent for the price.
- Some cottages have full kitchens — great for saving on meals
- Short walk to downtown and the beach
- Cottage-style charm without the cottage price
What I love: One block from the beach for a fraction of what the luxury hotels charge

Best Boutique Hotels in Carmel-by-the-Sea
This is honestly where Carmel shines. No two boutique hotels are the same here, and that’s exactly the point.
3. Tradewinds Carmel
Best for: Couples, families, design lovers
Consistently one of the top-rated hotels in town and once you see the design, you’ll get why. Asian-Californian vibes unlike anything else in Carmel.
- Antiques from Bali and China throughout
- Bamboo meditation garden + Balinese kimono robes
- 28 rooms, many with ocean views
- Quiet residential corner — feels like a genuine retreat
What I love: That meditation garden in the morning is everything Heads up: Quieter location — perfect if you want to decompress, not ideal if you want to be in the thick of it
4. Le Petit Pali at Ocean Avenue
Best for: First-timers, shoppers, people who want to walk everywhere
Right on Ocean Avenue — Carmel’s main street — and impossibly cute. This is your pick if it’s your first time and you want to be able to walk everywhere.
- Sage green walls, jute rugs, floral textiles — very Carmel, very adorable
- Fresh-baked cookies left in your room at night 🍪
- Complimentary Linus bikes to explore the village
- Sister property Le Petit Pali at 8th Ave is nearby with slightly better rates
What I love: The bikes! Carmel is so much better on two wheels Heads up: Rooms are on the smaller side

5. Vagabond’s House Inn
Best for: Anniversaries, proposals, feeling like you’re in a movie
Only 13 rooms. Freestanding bathtubs. Need I say more?
- Natural wood, leather, and stone throughout
- Guests gather in the courtyard in the evenings — magical energy you can’t manufacture
- Books up incredibly fast
What I love: That courtyard in the evening is genuinely one of the most romantic spots in all of Carmel Heads up: Only 13 rooms — book as far ahead as you possibly can
6. Cypress Inn
Best for: Dog moms, dog dads, anyone who refuses to travel without their pup
Part-owned by Doris Day, and her love of animals lives on here. This isn’t a “dogs allowed with a $50 fee” situation — your dog is an actual honored guest.
- 5-minute walk from Ocean Avenue
- Classic, charming decor
- Genuinely one of the most pet-welcoming hotels in all of California
What I love: Your dog will have the time of their life Heads up: More traditional style — not as design-forward as newer properties
Best Luxury Hotels in Carmel-by-the-Sea
Look, if you’re going to treat yourself anywhere in California, Carmel is the place to do it. These hotels are a splurge — but honestly? Worth every single penny.
7. L’Auberge Carmel

Best for: Couples, special occasions, food lovers
If you’re going to do Carmel properly, L’Auberge Carmel is the move. Only 20 rooms, been around since 1929, and it still feels like the most special place in town.
- Four-poster beds, antique furnishings, radiant-heated bathroom floors (yes, really)
- On-site restaurant Aubergine holds a Michelin star — eight-course tasting menu, coastal ingredients, chef’s kiss
- Garden spa with caviar facials and CBD treatments
- Four blocks from the beach
What I love: The dinner alone is worth the stay Heads up: Full splurge — save it for a birthday, anniversary, or a “I deserve this” moment
8. La Playa Hotel

Best for: Beach lovers, couples, families
The grande dame of Carmel hotels — everyone knows it, everyone loves it. At 75 rooms it’s one of the bigger properties in town, making it great for families too.
- Mediterranean architecture with ocean view rooms
- Outdoor pool + great on-site restaurant
- Champagne breakfasts (with an ocean view — enough said)
What I love: Classic and timeless without trying too hard Heads up: More traditional hotel feel than an intimate boutique — depends on your vibe
9. Villa Mara Carmel

Best for: Couples who want peace, quiet, and zero kids
Only 16 rooms, adults-only, perched above the bluffs of Carmel Beach. It doesn’t feel like a hotel — it feels like someone’s beautiful private home that you just happen to get to stay in.
- Each room named after a local figure or landmark
- Quieter Carmel Point neighborhood — away from the village bustle
- Ocean bluff views that will genuinely stop you mid-sentence
What I love: Adults-only + ocean views = the ultimate reset Heads up: About a mile from downtown — you’ll want a car
10. Carmel Beach Hotel

Best for: Anyone who wants to wake up and walk straight to the sand
Carmel’s newest luxury hotel (opened 2023) and already a local favorite. Barefoot on the sand in about 60 seconds from your room — hard to beat that.
- Literally steps from Carmel Beach
- On-site restaurant Foray already has a great reputation for coastal cuisine
- Fresh, modern design
What I love: You cannot get closer to the beach Heads up: Newer, so fewer reviews — but early feedback is glowing
Tips for Booking Hotels in Carmel-by-the-Sea
Book early — like, really early. Carmel is tiny and popular. Boutique inns sell out 2-3 months in advance, especially on weekends and in summer. Don’t leave it to the last minute.
Spring is the sweet spot. March through May is honestly the best time to visit — great weather, fewer crowds, and you can actually get a table at restaurants without a reservation made six weeks ago.
Stay in the village for your first visit. Everything is walkable if you’re near Ocean Avenue — beach, restaurants, galleries, wine tasting. You genuinely don’t need your car once you’re parked.
Always ask about breakfast. A lot of Carmel hotels include it or offer it as an add-on. Always worth asking when you book directly.
Book direct when you can. Hotels often give you better room assignments, more flexible cancellations, and little perks they won’t offer through Booking.com or Expedia.
So Where Should You Actually Stay?
Okay here’s my honest take. If you want the most special, splurge-worthy experience — L’Auberge Carmel, no question. If romance is the priority — Vagabond’s House Inn, book it now before it sells out. If you want to wake up and walk straight to the beach — Carmel Beach Hotel is your answer. And if your budget needs a break — Carmel Cottage Inn gives you the Carmel magic without the sticker shock.
Honestly though? There’s no bad choice here. Carmel is one of those places that just works its magic on you no matter where you sleep. The hard part is leaving.
